POLAR POWER QUEST

(A One Act Play)

Eli the Presley Power Penguin is bluer than his blue suede shoes, with no love of his own, it’s heartbreak hotel. But when a ninja giraffe arrives with a quest to help Po Po the polar bear princess Eli sees his chance to find true love. All he has to do is get past disco fish, an octopus’ garden, surfing turtles and try to teach Polar Mike how to groove like Elvis in order to prove that loving someone for who they are may be the answer to everyone’s problems.

POLAR POWER QUEST

Act One

#1 SOUND: SPY MUSIC

GEORGINA SNEAKS ONTO THE BARREN ANTARCTICA TUNDRA. A FEW ICE CHUNKS ARE SCATTERED ABOUT.

SOUND: MUSIC FADES

GEORGINA CHECKS HER UTILITY BELT AND PULLS OUT A MAP OF ANTARCTICA, SHOWS IT TO THE AUDIENCE AND NODS ONCE. PUTTING IT AWAY, SHE PULLS OUT A PICTURE OF A PENGUIN THAT LOOKS SUSPICIOUSLY LIKE ELVIS PRESLEY, SHOWING IT DRAMATICALLY TO THE AUDIENCE.

#2 SOUND: 50’S SURF MUSIC

A COMMOTION IS HEARD AND GEORGINA DIVES BEHIND A CHUNK OF ICE. SIX PENGUINS ENTER LAUGHING AND JOKING, TOWELING OFF AND PLAYING WITH A BEACH BALL.

SOUND: MUSIC FADES

PENGUIN 1:  That was great fishing today!

PENGUIN 2:  No seals, no worries!

PENGUIN 3:  Nothing like a dip in freezing water to let you know you’re alive.

PENGUIN 4:  I love being a penguin!

PENGUIN 5: (Launching the ball over PENGUIN 6’s head and towards GEORGINA) Heads up!

PENGUIN 6: (going to get the ball and discovering GEORGINA) What the heck?

GEORGINA STANDS UP AND WALKS TO CENTRE STAGE.

GEORGINA:  I’m on an urgent quest.

PENGUIN 1:  Who are you?

GEORGINA:  My name is Georgina.

PENGUIN 2:  What are you?

GEORGINA:  A giraffe

PENGUIN 3:  Aren’t you a little short to be a giraffe?

GEORGINA:  I’m in stealth mode.

ALL PENGUINS: Ohhh.

PENGUIN 4:  What kind of quest are you on?

GEORGINA:  I need to find the legendary Presley Power Penguin.

PENGUIN 5:  You mean Eli?

GEORGINA:  (Showing the picture) Him.

PENGUIN 6:  Yup, that’s Eli.

#3 SOUND: ELVIS MUSIC

PENGUIN 6:  Here he comes now.

THE PENGUINS PART AS ELI APPEARS SINGING AND DANCING.

SOUND: MUSIC FADES

ELI:   Hey ninja baby, what’s shaking?

GEORGINA: Princess Po Po, the polar bear princess of the north, needs your help.

ELI:   What kind of help?

GEORGINA:  She has to marry Polar Mike.

ELI:   Isn’t he the Michael Jackson impersonating polar bear prince?

PENGUIN 1:  Yeah, I heard he can moon walk with the best.

PENGUIN 2:  How cool.

PENGUIN 3:  Icy!

ELI:   So what’s the problem?

GEORGINA:  Princess Po Po wants to rock and roll.

ELI:   Elvis style?

GEORGINA:  Elvis style.

ELI: So if I teach Polar Mike to turn his moon walk into blue suede shoes, Princess Po Po would be happy.

GEORGINA:  You got it. Let’s go.

PENGUIN 4:  Eli, no!

PENGUIN 5:  You can’t go.

PENGUIN 6:  Who will rock and roll for us?

ELI:   What’s in it for me?

GEORGINA:  What do you need?

ELI: This little penguin is blue. With no love of my own it’s heartbreak hotel.

ALL PENGUINS: Poor Eli. No penguin princess to love.

GEORGINA: You never know what you’ll find. I can at least guarantee all the fish you can eat.

ELI: Sorry penguin friends, duty calls. Come on ninja girl, let’s shake rattle and roll.

EXIT ELI AND GEORGINA

#4 SOUND: ELVIS MUSIC FADING OUT.

Act Two

#5 SOUND: ELVIS MUSIC

ELI AND GEORGINA ENTER SWIMMING.

SOUND: MUSIC FADES

ELI:   I had no idea giraffes could swim.

GEORGINA: I’m a highly trained ninja. Swimming is the fastest way to get to the North Pole

ELI: But aren’t you worried about sharks, stingrays, seals or killer whales?

GEORGINA:  No. I’m worried about fish.

ELI:   Fish?

#6 SOUND: BEE GEE’S MUSIC

ENTER THE DISCO DANCING FISH. THEIR DANCE SURROUNDS ELI AND GEORGINA.

SOUND: MUSIC FADES

GEORGINA:  Disco Fish.

DISCO FISH 1: Look who it is.

DISCO FISH GROUP: It’s Eli! It’s Eli!

DISCO FISH 2: Please Eli, can you show us your Presley Power Penguin moves?

DISCO FISH GROUP: Please, please, please?

ELI:   Sure kids. Anything for my fans.

GEORGINA:  But we don’t have time for this.

#7 SOUND: ELVIS MUSIC

ELI LAUNCHES INTO A SONG AND DANCE WITH THE FISH WHILE GEORGINA KEEPS TRYING TO WHISK HIM AWAY.

SOUND: MUSIC FADES

DISCO FISH GROUP: (Calling out as they leave) Bye Eli. We love you.

THE FISH SWIM OFF STAGE WAVING THEIR FINS.

GEORGINA, STILL SWIMMING, PULLS OUT A SET OF BINOCULARS AND LOOKS AROUND.

ELI:   What does Princess Po Po look like?

GEORGINA PUTS THE BINOCULARS AWAY AND TAKES OUT HER MAP

GEORGINA:  (Looking at the map) Like a polar bear, why do you ask?

ELI:   I’m just wondering.

GEORGINA: (Still looking at the map) She can only marry a prince so don’t get any ideas.

ELI:   But I’m a…

FLOWERS BEGIN APPEARING ON STAGE ALONG WITH SPARKLY OCTOPUS

ELI:   (Looking around) Hey, this place is really nice.

GEORGINA:  (Finally looking up) Oh no! We’re off course.

ELI:   Where are we?

#8 SOUND: BEATLES’ OCTOPUSES GARDEN

THE OCTOPUS BEGIN TO DANCE TRAPPING ELI AND GEORGINA WITH THEIR TENTACLES.

SOUND: MUSIC FADES

OCTOPUS 1:  Welcome to our garden.

OCTOPUS 2:  We love to have guests.

OCTOPUS GROUP: Stay! Stay forever.

GEORGINA:  We are on an urgent quest. We don’t have time for this.

OCTOPUS GROUP: Stay! Stay forever.

ELI:   Princess Po Po and Polar Mike need my help

OCTOPUS GROUP: Stay! Stay forever.

GEORGINA:  Don’t make me use my martial arts on you!

ELI:   Now, now Georgina, there is a much simpler way to go about this.

#9 SOUND: ELVIS LOVE SONG

ELI SINGS AND THE OCTOPUS SWOON OFF STAGE.

SOUND: MUSIC FADES

ELI: Does Princess Po Po really want Polar Mike to do Elvis? Wouldn’t she rather have an authentic Elvis impersonator?

GEORGINA:  Sure but where would that leave Polar Mike?

ELI:   You’re right. I just think you should like people for who they are.

GEORGINA:  Good call Presley Power Penguin.

#10 SOUND: SURF MUSIC

GEORGINA:  Someone’s coming, be careful.

ENTER THE SEA TURTLES ON SURF BOARDS.

SOUND: MUSIC FADES

SEA TURTLE 1: Dude, are you Eli?

SEA TURTLE 2: Yeah dude, you totally look like that Presley Power Penguin guy.

ELI:   That’s me.

SEA TURTLE 1: Dude, aren’t you a little far north?

ELI: I’m on my way to teach Polar Mike to rock and roll old school style.

SEA TURTLE 2: Awesome dude!

GEORGINA: Sorry dudes, we don’t have time for chit chat. We have to get to the North Pole.

SEA TURTLE 1: That’s cool dude.

SEA TURTLE 2: We can give you dudes a lift on our surf boards.

SEA TURTLE 1: Get you there in no time dude.

ELI:   Awesome!

SEA TURTLE 1: Stellar!

SEA TURTLE 2: Radical!

GEORGINA:  Let’s just go.

#11 SOUND: SURF MUSIC

ELI, TURTLES, AND GEORGINA DANCE ON THE SURF BOARDS.

SEA TURTLE 1: Watch out dudes! Monster wave coming!

SEA TURTLE 2: Cowabunga dudes!

ELI:   Wahoo!

 ALL EXIT WITH SURFBOARDS.

SOUND: MUSIC FADES

 

POLAR POWER QUEST

Act Three

Scene One

#12 SOUND: MICHAEL JACKSON MUSIC

THRONE ROOM OF THE POLAR PALACE. PRINCESS PO PO IS TRYING TO MOON WALK WHILE ROSIE IMITATES HER BADLY, THE POLAR BEAR KING AND QUEEN DANCE TOGETHER.

SOUND: MUSIC FADES

PO PO:  If I have to moon walk one more time, I’m going to scream!

POLAR BEAR QUEEN:  But my darling Po Po, it’s so much fun and you  look so cute when you do it.

ROSIE:  No she doesn’t, she looks kinda dumb.

POLAR BEAR KING: Now Rosie, be a good little popsicle.

ROSIE:  (Acting cute) Okay daddy. (Secretly sticks her tongue out at Po Po)

PO PO:  (Sighing) I’d much rather rock-a-hula than beat it.

POLAR BEAR KING: That’s no way to talk, I happen to like Mike’s songs.

PO PO: I know daddy, and Polar Mike is my very best friend, but we’re just so different.

POLAR BEAR QUEEN: Well according to the ninja we hired, Eli will soon be here. I’m sure Polar Mike can learn to be who you want him to.

ROSIE:  I think he’s cool the way he is. I’d marry him if I were old enough.

PO PO: You’d marry a ice cube if you were old enough. You just like weddings.

ROSIE:  (Whining) Daddy!

POLAR BEAR KING: Now, now Princess Po Po be nice to your darling sister.

POLAR BEAR QUEEN: Anyway he’s the only prince around and you must marry a prince. So no more arguing!

ENTER GEORGINA

GEORGINA: (Bowing to the king and queen.) I have brought the Presley Power Penguin, as requested.

#13 SOUND: ELVIS MUSIC:

ENTER ELI SINGING.

SOUND: MUSIC FADES

PO PO:  (Nearly fainting and pulling out a autograph book) Oh wow. I love your music! Can I have your autograph?

ROSIE:  Me too. Me too. (Grabs her dad’s crown and a magic marker)

ELI:   Sure. (He signs the autograph book and the crown)

ROSIE HUGS THE CROWN AND PUTS IT ON HER HEAD. POLAR BEAR KING FEELS HIS HEAD FOR HIS CROWN AND FROWNS AT ROSIE. ROSIE SHRUGS.

ELI: (Aside to Georgina) You didn’t tell me Princess Po Po would be so beautiful.

GEORGINA:  That isn’t in my job description.

ELI:   Where’s Polar Mike?

#14 SOUND: MICHAEL JACKSON MUSIC

POLAR MIKE MOONWALKS IN.

SOUND: MUSIC FADES

POLAR MIKE: Right here and ready to learn.

ELI:   Great. Lets get started.

POLAR BEAR KING: We’ll give you some room.

POLAR BEAR QUEEN: Have fun dear.

EXIT KING AND QUEEN. PO PO AND GEORGINA PRETEND TO LEAVE BUT HIDE BEHIND THE THRONE TO WATCH. ROSIE LINGERS IN THE DOORWAY, PEEKING IN.

POLAR MIKE: I’m not so sure about this. How do I start?

ELI:   Just shake your hips.

#15 & #16 SOUND: ELVIS MUSIC SWITCHING TO MICHAEL JACKSON MUSIC

POLAR MIKE: Like this?

POLAR MIKE STARTS SHAKING BUT SOON ENDS UP IN A MOON WALK.

SOUND: MUSIC FADES

POLAR MIKE: Oh, I’ll never get it. It’s just not me.

ELI: I’ll say daddy-O. Why do you want to do this anyway? Why change your tune?

POLAR MIKE: Princess Po Po is my best friend. I’ll do anything to make her happy. Even if it means marrying her.

ELI:   That’s sweet and all, but do you love her?

POLAR MIKE: No. (Mike slumps) I’m really in love a pretty little panda bear named Lu Lu who helps out at Santa’s workshop. It’s her I want to marry.

PO PO RUSHES OUT, FOLLOWED BY GEORGINA

PO PO:  Polar Mike follow your heart! Go to Lu Lu!

POLAR MIKE: But you have to marry a prince. I can change. (he tries to shake his hips again but fails miserably).

PO PO: (Po Po puts her hand on his shoulder, stopping his convulsions) No, you shouldn’t be someone you’re not. Besides, I’d rather find a prince who can move to my beat, even if I have to wait.

ELI:   (clears his throat)

GEORGINA:  You may not have to wait long, right Presley Power Penguin?

ELI:   It’s true. I’m a love sick penguin prince.

#17 SOUND: ELVIS LOVE SONG

ELI SINGS A LOVE SONG TO PO PO.

SOUND: MUSIC FADES

ELI:  (Getting on one knee). Princess Po Po, will you wear my ring around your neck?

PO PO:  Oh yes, yes, yes.

ROSIE:  (Rushing to centre stage) Oh hurrah, there will be a wedding!

ELI:   Maybe two. Polar Mike, go get Lu Lu.

#18 SOUND: ELVIS MUSIC TEN SECONDS THEN FADING OUT.

 

 

POLAR POWER QUEST

Act Three

Scene Two

 

THE JUSTICE OF THE PEACE STANDS AT THE PULPIT. ON THE SIDE, STAND THE KING, QUEEN, ROSIE AND GEORGINA. THE QUEEN IS WEEPING WITH JOY. OTHER POLAR BEAR GUESTS STAND TO THE SIDE.

#19 SOUND: MICHAEL JACKSON MUSIC

POLAR MIKE AND LU LU MOON WALK IN.

#20 SOUND: ELVIS MUSIC

PRINCESS PO PO AND ELI DANCE IN. 

SOUND: MUSIC FADES

JUSTICE OF THE PEACE:  May all sweethearts become married couples, and may all married couples remain sweethearts. I now pronounce you husbands and wives. Lets eat fish.

#21 SOUND: MICHAEL JACKSON MUSIC

POLAR MIKE STARTS SINGING AND DANCING ALONG WITH LU LU AND THE REST OF THE CAST NEAR THE BACK OF THE STAGE. ELI AND GEORGINA MOVE TO THE FRONT OF THE STAGE, NOT DANCING. PO PO FOLLOWS.

ELI:   I must thank you ninja girl for helping me find my true love.

GEORGINA:  Will you stay here in the north or return to the land of penguins?

ELI: (He looks at Polar Mike and covers his ears) I really must head back.

PO PO:  (Also covering her ears) And I can’t wait to join you.

POLAR BEAR KING: (Joining Po Po, Eli, and Georgina) But first a song from my new son in law, Eli the Polar Power Penguin!

ROSIE:  It’s party time!

ALL:   (Cheer)

#22 SOUND: ABRUPT END TO THE MICHAEL JACKSON MUSIC, REPLACED BY ROCKING ELVIS MUSIC.

ELI GRABS THE MICROPHONE AWAY FROM POLAR MIKE AND LEADS THE CAST IN SONG AND DANCE NUMBER – INVITING THE AUDIENCE TO JOIN IN.
