Reality Is Optional Kids' Writing Club
Need a place that understands you? Come and join the RIO. Create a writing club the way you want it. Youth led, adult mentored. Guest speakers, writing games, friends and creativity. Ages seventeen and under. Play with your words — all you need is a notebook and pen. Mentored by Kim Firmston - how scary is that?

FreeFall Magazine
This is a local Calgary literary magazine that publishes short stories, book reviews, author interviews and poetry. They are interested in only unpublished work and will take first time authors. A committee chooses the manuscripts, so you have to impress a whole whack of people to get published. I so far have had no luck being published by them – YET. They also run a yearly writing contest. Check out their website – FreeFall is a really great magazine.

Writing Dot Com
Writing Dot Com is a community for writers of all abilities. It’s a place to play with language and meet other authors. It costs nothing to join, though if you want the perks, you can pay for different levels of service. On this site you can read and review other’s work and have your work reviewed too. There are games, contests, and message boards. Some of the writing on this site is horrendous, some is amazing and a lot is in-between. I’m glad I found this site – it’s been a big help and it’s fun too.

Alexandra Writers' Centre Society
The Alexandra Writers’ Centre Society is a Calgary, Alberta, based writing group that teaches small, reasonably priced classes on writing and publishing. They hold occasional readings and get togethers and offer accessibility to critique groups.
They also put out an anthology of high quality members’ writing called the Alexandra Reader. It is available from their web site for $20.00. My story, Returning Home, is published there.

Preditors & Editors
This site is a great way to check out both publishers and agents before you submit. While not perfect, it is a wonderful resource that I use quite often.
