THE HOME FRONT
WHO is this so called KIM FIRMSTON?
Kim am a real life mutant – though one without any cool powers. When she is not writing novels and plays, or cursing obvious villain mistakes, she warps young minds in her Reality is Optional Kids' Writing club, Novelmancers Novel Writing Club, and by teaching homeschool and in-school classes and workshops. You can also find her at WordsWorth Writing Camp and the ACS Dramantics Theatre Camp, among other places. She currently works as the youth program director for the Alexandra Writers Centre Society where she does super awesome stuff.
Kim is dedicated to sharing writing with children of all ages including those not able to write yet and promoting youth who wish to make it their career.

Adaptation In The Impoverished City
Is a documentary made by a bunch of people in the AWCS Youth Program. I am both the Executive Producer and writer but also everything else in some capacity (as is the job of the executive producer). This doc was made possible by a grant from Telus STORYHIVE and is available on Telus Optik TV on demand, and in June 2022 it will be available Storyhive's YouTube channel. It's also entered in a bunch of film festivals. It's become a finalist in The Vancouver Film Fest and Toronto Film Magazine, and is currently a quarter finalist in the Calgary Independent Film Festival. We are so grateful to Telus STORYHIVE for the grant to make this movie. We are all newbies to this and we all learned a lot. I love the fact that half our cast and crew was under 22 years old and that we had a wide variety of diversity from LGBTQ+ representation, people of colour, and neuro diverse youth and adults working on this film. It really shows that nothing can hold you back if you put your mind to it.
Through Adaptation in an Impoverished City, we follow three Calgary teens as they experience the pandemic and seek out the adaptations of local heroes. How they’ve been out on the front lines helping the city recover, but also how they have dealt with the exploded economy and found their own path to recovery while helping others. Together these teens find the adaptations that will help them and their generation navigate future crises. Using animation, interviews, and spoken word, it’s a documentary not to be missed.

How to be a Super Villain news...
How to be a Super Villain, my beginning chapter book about Seth, a elementary student whos dream to rule the world with evil is now being thwarted by Melinda Fong and her Smile Gang after the principal finds out his less than desirable career choice, is being considered by an agent. Hopefully they like it so you can read it too! The story is so much fun. Now the wait begins.
Boiled Cat is in libraries now! Get it in yours today!
Hook Up recently actually brought in some royalties! For all of you non-authors out there - that means it paid off the advance on earnings and is now making more money! At the moment it's enough for a movie and a large popcorn but we can always hope for more. Also, did you know I get money every time you take one of my books out of the library? So however you do it - read books. It helps authors - me included, and we love it when you read our words. Happy summer reading!
It's OFFICIAL! I'm now the Alexandra Writers' Centre Societies Youth Program Director. Hooray!
In December I came in second in the Can You Hear Me Now? all ages poetry slam. I guess my poetry is getting better! Yay! I'm also teaching both Home School writing and Drama as well as regular writing and drama for Cardel South Rec Centre. Check out my classes and camps if you wish to come and learn writing from me in the South part of Calgary! Also, this January, there was a run on my Lady Baden Powell skit by Girl Guide leaders coast to coast. There must have been an article about it or something. If anyone wants a copy of that skit - or any play or skit in my fun section - they are available free of charge to community groups and schools. Just let me know what your project is and ask for the one you like.
My youth writing club Reality Is Optional recently wrote a twitter story for the 30th anniversary of the Calgary International Children's Festival. Here's the documentary about it by Rocket House.
Hey people!! I was interviewed for CJSW's YYC Maker's program on writing and my youth group Reality Is Optional. I actually sound like I know what I'm doing. Thanks Andres!
