Hook Up - the novel study
1) Cody Manywounds has multiple problems at the beginning of Hook Up: Irritating family members, racism at school, friendships that have fallen apart, and a girlfriend he has to keep secret. Pick one of these things and describe how you have dealt with this in your own life and what methods you used to handle with it.
2) Cody has made some bad decisions in his life, from running drugs, to trashing a kid’s house, not telling Miranda Blake that the condom broke, showing up to talk to Miranda’s parents while drunk, and giving out Miranda’s e-mail to multiple on line groups. Discuss a bad decision you have made and if going through the experience helped you learn something or if it was something you’d rather just forget about entirely. Did anything good come from it in the end? How did it all work out?
3) Teen pregnancy rates in Canada have dropped nearly 37% in over a decade and 25% in the U.S.. In 2006, Canada had the lowest teen birth/abortion rate per 1,000 women aged 15-19. While Statistics Canada reports that about 50 per cent of all 16- and 17-year-olds are sexually active, what do you think accounts for this drop in teen pregnancy and abortion rates? Can more be done to prevent teen pregnancy? Do you think any of these solutions would have affected the Cody and Miranda’s decisions?
4) Cody has two relationships in Hook Up. One is with Miranda Blake and the other is with Carly Yellow Horse. Both these characters are very different, as is their relationship with Cody. Compare and contrast the two relationships. Which do you think is the healthier of the two? What makes a healthy relationship?
